From the get-go, it's clear this is not your average pale ale. To start with, it pours more amber and tastes richer and with more caramel than most modern pales - more like those of an earlier era in the States, in fact - thanks to a grain bill that blends rolled wheat with Maris Otter, Munich and Carared malts.

The hazy double IPA was built using Mosaic (in Cryo and Incognito form), Strata and Nelson Sauvin that burst into grapefruit, sweet pineapple, mango and rockmelon.

Read More...Thiolized Hazy Pale was brewed with a thiol-releasing yeast from America's White Labs called Tropicale Blend (don't worry Border Force; it's not the GMO kind). To free those thiols, Bridge Road picked Nectaron, Centennial, Mosaic and El Dorado for a tropical charge so intense, maybe Border Force should actually be worried.

Cosmic Slop Vol 2 is differentiated from its predecessor by minor changes to the ingredients, as well as subtle tweaks to the graphics, but in essence it's the same Galaxy-and Nectaron-showcasing DIPA.

And, while they're keen to highlight Yorkshire Pale's use of Fuggles, East Kent Goldings and Styrian Goldings hops and the malt character of the other two, there's plenty of common ground to be found in all three.

The first sip gives more of the same, delivered with a soft wheat malt character and easygoing dryness, with the Motueka and Riwaka hops bringing in more layers of their citrus and tropicals as you keep drinking.

The past month has seen a brood of churlish Western Australian dark hoppy IPAs hit the market, although it's something from which this black IPA needn't feel any pressure. Milk and dark chocolate malt meld with Strata, Simcoe and Mosaic hop influence, imbuing the whole as smoothly cohesive and moderately bitter.

Featuring Cashmere, Nectaron, Idaho 7 and Centennial hops, if you let the figurehead speak you'll find upfront grapefruit with plenty of zest, floral bergamot and pine with a lasting bitterness.

And, although Luminosa's mother variety Sorachi Ace may be triggering for some - not this writer, mind you - the evidence here is a bright, tropical, citrus affair with support from Strata and Simcoe.
